Dalhatu Tafoki, a Katsina lawmaker at the House of Representatives has sponsored a motion on the negative impact of pornographic materials on societal values, particularly among young people and the resolution was passed on Tuesday after receiving wide support from other lawmakers through a voice vote conducted by House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
In his arguments, Tafoki said, unrestricted access to pornographic materials has serious negative impact on societal values, particularly among young people.
He stated that several countries in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East have enacted laws prohibiting pornography.
He also referenced warnings from psychologists and sociologists about the harmful effects of pornography, including its potential to promote adultery, prostitution, and addiction.
In his own words he said, “Renowned psychologists and sociologists worldwide have issued strong warnings about the psychological, sociological, and mental consequences of consuming pornographic content.”
Majority of the lawmakers supported the motion through a voice vote conducted by House Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.
They emphasised the need to protect Nigerian cultural and moral standards by curbing access to explicit content.
The House of Representatives has therefore directed the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) to order internet service providers in the country to block all websites hosting obscene and pornographic content.
They urged the NCC to ensure immediate compliance by internet service providers and to impose penalties on service providers that fail to comply with the order.
