Rising cost of living, low income, emerging needs are some of the critical reasons why consideration to cutting down cost on some things such as electricity bill to meet other pressing needs must be a priority.

Those who struggle to keep their expenses low likely didn’t know they could still cut down on electricity bills while enjoying basic electricity needs like lighting, cooling, and running essential appliances.

Just a few smart changes will do the magic, reducing energy use and lowering the bill while still keeping the home powered.

  1. Switch off appliances when not in use

The easiest ways to save money on electricity is to switch off appliances when not in use. Leaving appliances on when not in use consume lots of energy unnecessarily. TVs, fans, and lights can be switched off when not in use. Putting them on standby mode still consumes little electricity.

Make it a habit to turn off lights, fans, and electronics when leaving a room. Also, unplug devices like phone chargers and laptops when they are fully charged. You’ll be surprised how much difference this small change can make on your bill.

Currently, there are smart devices that can help switch on/off devices in case switching off looks cumbersome. Some of these smart devices can be timed to switch on/off as scheduled or by using voice prompts, presence, motion etc.

  1. Use energy-saving bulbs and appliances

Traditional light bulbs and appliances consume a lot of power, but LED bulbs and LED TV, use far less electricity and last longer. Replacing your regular bulbs and TV with LED ones can reduce your electricity usage by up to 80%.

The same applies to other home appliances. If you’re buying a new fridge, fan, or air conditioner, look for energy-efficient models that use less power by checking the energy consumption details or specifications on the body of the appliance or in the manual. While they may cost a little more at first, they help you save a lot on electricity in the long run.

  1. Make the most of natural light and air

There is plenty of sunlight in Nigeria, so, use it to your advantage. Instead of turning on the lights during the day, open your curtains to brighten up your home. If possible, position your furniture in a way that allows natural light to fill the room.

Instead of running the fan or AC all day for cooling, try opening windows and doors to let fresh air in. You can also use light-colored curtains and sheets to reflect heat and keep your room cooler without needing to use an air conditioner all the time.

  1. Limit the use of high-power appliances

Some home appliances like air conditioners, electric irons, and water heaters use a lot of electricity, if you must use them, try to use them wisely. For example, iron clothes in bulk instead of ironing one item at a time.

Also, consider reducing how often you use your water heater in Nigeria where the climate is warm, heating water is not always necessary. Using cold or lukewarm water for bathing can help cut down your electricity usage.

  1. Consider using solar energy

With the high cost of electricity and frequent power cuts, solar energy is becoming a great alternative. Solar panels can power small devices like fans, lights, and even TVs without adding to your electricity bill.

Installing a full solar system may be expensive but you can start small. You can buy a solar-powered lamp for lighting or a small solar fan for cooling. Over time, you’ll save money while also reducing your dependence on the national grid.

Solar power is becoming widely acceptable because as long as sun shines you can always have power to light up your house, run basic appliances and store power for use when need arises everyday.
