Sultan of Sokoto Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar has expressed his willingness and commitment to accept any law approved by the Sokoto state Government.

The Sultan made the remarks at a public hearing on Local Government and chieftaincy law aimed at amending the tenure of local government chairmen and chieftaincy matters in the state, held at the Mini chamber of the Sokoto state house of Assembly.

Represented by a Kingmaker and member of the Sultanate council Dr Muhammadu Jabbi Kilgori the Sultan said the Sultanate clearly understood the intention of the state government and dispelled all rumours alleging the dethronement of the Sultan of Sokoto.

Presenting the executive bill, the state Attorney General and commissioner for Justice Nasiru Mohammed Binji said the bill is seeking to suppress all powers to appoint or dethrone any traditional ruler in the state stressing that all power to Appoint District, village heads and any other person to work with traditional  institutions is vested on the power of the executive based on section 5 sub section 2 of the constitution of the federal Republic of Nigeria.

He explained that the state government is acting on the provisions of the constitution which is supreme noting that the new law if amended would enhance general administration of local Government and Chieftaincy matters.

The attorney general further explained that the second segment of the executive bill is seeking to increase the tenure of local government chairmen from two years to three years which the past administration in the state passed a bill that reduced the tenure of the local government chairmen for a reason that was only best known to them.

He added that if passed into law, the bill would allow the local government chairmen to execute projects and programs for socio-security and economic development of the state.
