The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has secured victory in all chairmanship and councillorship positions across the 30 local government areas of Osun State.
Chairman of the Osun State Independent Electoral Commission, Hashim Abioye, announced the results at a press briefing on Saturday.
Despite warnings from the Nigeria Police and the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, to halt the poll due to security concerns, the electoral commission proceeded, citing a ruling by the Osun State High Court in Ilesa.
Voting began as early as 8 a.m. across the state, with Governor Ademola Adeleke casting his ballot in Ede North Local Government. Describing the process as peaceful, the governor reiterated his call for a violence-free election.
However, the electoral commission chairman accused security forces of sealing the commission’s headquarters in Osogbo and arresting some officials. The commission was forced to relocate to an undisclosed location to conduct the election.
The police had earlier warned of potential violence, aligning with the Attorney General’s directive to suspend the poll. Despite these concerns, the exercise proceeded, handing the PDP a landslide victory.
