Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State while receiving in audience delegation led by Defence Minister, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar in condolence visit to the state says death toll in tanker explosion in Jigawa State has risen to 167.
Earlier on Wednesday, The Spokesperson for the Jigawa State Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam said, “A tragic and devastating incident occurred on October 15, 2024, at about 2230hrs, involving a petrol tanker with registration number KMC 6412 F, driven by one Yusuf Mohd ‘m’ age 32yrs of Hotoro Quarters, Kano State”.
He reported 105 death toll update while 70 persons were confirmed to have sustained injuries in the tragic incident.
However, Governor Namadi on Friday while reporting to the Minister of Defense and his predecessor said “As of Thursday evening, 167 lives had been lost in the fire disaster.”
He further explained that there are 67 others who sustained varying degree of fire burnt wounds being treated at various hospitals within and outside the state.
Also, speaking on the disaster, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, on Thursday, said “The team will assess the circumstances surrounding the crash and the explosion to identify causal factors and provide safety recommendations aimed at preventing future occurrences.
“We extend our heartfelt condolences to the families affected by this devastating accident. The NSIB is committed to uncovering the cause of the explosion and ensuring that safety lessons are learnt”.
