A video posted on X platform by TVC television, showed Mrs Tinubu unveiling a small private vegetable garden in the State House as her contribution to the nation’s food drive. In a swift reaction, President Bola Tinubu’s government has announced the scale-up of Nigeria’s first lady, Oluremi Tinubu’s Home Garden Initiative.

The first lady highlighted the power of individual actions, stating that while single efforts may seem small, they can collectively make a substantial difference in advancing the food security initiative, emphasising the importance of collaborative efforts to drive meaningful change.

She said: “I am trying to be a farmer because we need food in Nigeria and everybody should try to grow something. I didn’t know what I can add to State House and I thought a private vegetable garden will be nice, that has very good health benefits. She said the garden has at least seven types of vegetable including spinach, water leaf, bitter leaf, Ewedu, lemon grass, scent leaf and okro.

“For me, this is my own contribution to food drive and I believe that anybody can do it and my young friends are here to see us unveil this, so that they too can be challenged.

“This little garden will be able to provide healthy vegetables enough for my household and I would definitely be able to let some of my staff have as well.

“The solution to any problem lies in everyone contributing their own quota to getting that solution. As a leader, I must show example and plant my own garden.

“This will also enhance communal living and help drive the food security campaign of the Federal Government. The vegetables are medicinal and the garden is to lead by example for other women to embrace smart gardening.”

Also, on her X account on Saturday, she advised Nigerian women to get involved in farming to boost food production in the country.

In a swift reaction, President Bola Tinubu’s government has announced the scale-up of Nigeria’s first lady, Oluremi Tinubu’s Home Garden Initiative.

The Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, made this known in a statement issued on Wednesday. He said government’s support for the scale-up of the Home Garden Initiative of the first lady is part of a series of strategic measures aimed at addressing the high food prices currently affecting Nigerians.

Kyari said the government will be “supporting the scale-up of the Home Garden Initiative by the Office of the First Lady of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.” The minister added that part of the government’s measures is enhancement of Nutrition Security and promotion of production of fortified food commodities. He said further that all the measures will be executed within the next 180 days.

He concluded by saying that over the next 14 days, in close collaboration with the Presidential Food Systems Coordinating Unit (PFSCU) and the Economic Management Team (EMT), the government will convene with respective agencies to finalize the implementation frameworks.

Whereas, the First lady on her X handle launched #EveryHomeAGarden. She said, “#EveryHomeAGarden competition by the Renewed Hope Initiative, (RHI) is not just a competition. It aims to inculcate the habit of farming and food production into the society right from the family unit and promote eating healthy foods.

“I would like to encourage all Nigerian women to join the #EveryHomeAGarden competition and get involved in farming and food production,” she concluded.
